“Only One Life…”

December 31, 2017 By Kristin Saatzer Leave a Comment

 Only one life. How will we spend it for Christ?

Two little lines I heard one day,
Traveling along life’s busy way;
Bringing conviction to my heart,
And from my mind would not depart;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, yes only one,
Soon will its fleeting hours be done;
Then, in ‘that day’ my Lord to meet,
And stand before His Judgement seat;
Only one life,’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, the still small voice,
Gently pleads for a better choice
Bidding me selfish aims to leave,
And to God’s holy will to cleave;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, a few brief years,
Each with its burdens, hopes, and fears;
Each with its clays I must fulfill,
living for self or in His will;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

When this bright world would tempt me sore,
When Satan would a victory score;
When self would seek to have its way,
Then help me Lord with joy to say;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Give me Father, a purpose deep,
In joy or sorrow Thy word to keep;
Faithful and true what e’er the strife,
Pleasing Thee in my daily life;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Oh let my love with fervor burn,
And from the world now let me turn;
Living for Thee, and Thee alone,
Bringing Thee pleasure on Thy throne;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, yes only one,
Now let me say,”Thy will be done”;
And when at last I’ll hear the call,
I know I’ll say ’twas worth it all”;
Only one life,’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last. ”

Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.
And when I am dying, how happy I’ll be,
If the lamp of my life has been burned out for Thee

Devotions for Advent: JESUS

December 21, 2017 By Kristin Saatzer 2 Comments

JESUS

And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt

call his name JESUS.

 Luke 1:31 ASV

 Iēsoús – Jesus, the transliteration of the Hebrew /Lṓt(“Yehoshua”/Jehoshua, contracted to “Joshua”) which means “Yahweh saves” (or “Yahweh is salvation”).

Strong’s Concordance

Yeshua. A common male, Jewish name. A popular name, like today’s version of Jack or John. We discover ten men named Yeshua in the Old Testament. In the New Testament, three other Yeshua’s (besides the Savior) hide in the stories. Perhaps in the Bible times, a Yeshua resided in each neighborhood.

Mary and Joseph, instructed by the angel, gave their uncommon baby a common name:

Eight days later, when the baby was circumcised, he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel even before he was conceived. Luke 2:21 NLT

The prophets titled Jesus with many names, designations, and descriptions. Every prophet predicted this Savior. A spread of  400 years separated the last words of the Old Testament and the appearance of the angel (Matthew 1:20). Then, Jesus arrived on the scene.

An interminable wait.

Blackness and oppression had settled on this nation of Jews. Yet, I believe the hope of their rescuer filled the dark with flickers of light. Expectation was in the air they breathed, the hope of a not-so-normal rescuer they’d been promised.

Along came the savior-baby, this long-expected Jesus, given a normal, humble name: Yeshua.

In Philippians 2, Apostle Paul describes Jesus:

7b …a servant in form
and a man indeed.
The very likeness of humanity,
8 He humbled Himself…

I find a key in this passage regarding why God may have chosen this humble name for His noble son.

You see, our Jesus lowered Himself from the glory of God and all of its non-common aspects, to live with us here, in all of its common aspects. A humble human. A king with a heart to live as a regular “John” for us in our neighborhood. Nothing flashy or arrogant about this Yeshua, not even his name. One who knew our suffering, pain, poverty, and hope. A savior with a non-glamorous name, come to save a non-glamorous world.

 Reflect:

  1. How can we model the humility of Jesus this season?
  2. Read Philippians 2:5-12

Jesus,

I praise your earthly name, so common for an uncommon Savior. I humble myself before you this advent day as I thank you for humbling yourself so commonly for me.

Amen

Come, thou long expected Jesus,
born to set thy people free;
from our fears and sins release us,
let us find our rest in thee.
Israel’s strength and consolation,
hope of all the earth thou art;
dear desire of every nation,
joy of every longing heart.

Charles Wesley 1744

Can We Talk About Christmas? Relationships and Christmas Part Two

December 9, 2017 By Kristin Saatzer 4 Comments

Relationships and Christmas Part Two

My Christmas intention is to focus on people and relationships. Let’s continue with part two (see part one: https://wp.me/p4RztF-Vz):

~See the unseen, the lonely, the hurting:

 Christmas tree cross

“QUIETLY  turn Your eyes  to me and be compassionate toward me because I am lonely and persecuted.” Psalm 25:16 The Voice

It was my third  trip to Walmart in two  days. I picked the slowest line (as usual), with a customer ahead of me needing help using her credit card. Lots of help. The checker was visibly irritated as she snarled at the credit card woman. My turn. As I loaded my groceries on the conveyor, I said hello and asked the checker how she was doing. She didn’t answer, so I tried again. Still no answer. When it came time to pay, I repeatedly tried to start a conversation and she  declined. It became a game to me, as I  determined to get a word out of her. I lost the game. I gotta hand it to her, she was good.

The holidays can really stink for customer service workers (especially those  who have to deal with irritating folks like me). However, usually, a kind word or compliment may add a dose of pleasantness to their day. So many customer service workers are assaulted with rudeness and spend hours on their aching feet. I try to put myself in their shoes and I can’t stand that long. Bless them.

A smile for a harried Mama with tots in her cart or an elderly man shopping solo. A greeting to the Good Samaritan ringing the bell. It requires so little of me.

Then, there are those in the midst of deep pain, people in our circles  who are hurting and lonely and hating Christmas.

For example, I have seven friends in the process of divorce. Seven! Not a Merry and Bright season for these dear ones and their children. I make it a priority to reach out and pray daily for them.

I must slow down and intentionally remember these dears ones.

Lord remind me. Turn my eyes to the unseen, lonely and discouraged this day. This Advent season.

Can We Talk About Christmas? Relationships and Christmas Part One

December 5, 2017 By Kristin Saatzer 4 Comments

Relationships and Christmas Part One

My Christmas Intention

At the end of the Thanksgiving week, I sat down with my notebook and began the Christmas giving and gift list. I aim to start the season with purpose, planning, and lists. This looks prettier some years than others. As I scribbled out ideas on what to do for and get my loved ones, I started to pray. Asking the Lord what I could give Him, I felt God nudging my focus toward relationships.

You see, I love people, and I love God, but if I’m not careful, I’m swept up in crossing off my list and the getting-things-done seasonal trap. Yes, most of the items on my list are others-focused (buying gifts, charitable giving, baking, cooking, house tasks, etc.) And I can certainly get my tinsel in a tangle when my focus is all about productivity. I want to connect deeply in my relationships this Christmas, especially in my relationship with Jesus.

Therefore, relationships are my 2017 Christmas intention.

Yes, responsibilities are important and necessary. However, I want to center in on others and invest deeply. Here are a few points and scriptures I will use to guide me along the way this Advent time. I’d love to share them with you.

~The ultimate model of a Christmas relationship (of course) is God and his son:

“...and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.” Matthew 3:17 NASB

The Christmas story oozes in human dynamics: God and Jesus, Mary and Elizabeth, Mary and Joseph, Mary and Jesus, the shepherds, the Wiseman, and Herod. The Bible is replete with kinship and family ties. Relationships matter to God. Importantly, the one we share with Him is of utmost priority.

Each day of Advent, I spend time reading “God’s Story” and in prayer. This is a time of quiet focus as the dawn blooms and the morning birds chirp. Time for my Saviour and I to gel before the hustle and bustle of the day. I record my Christmas thanks and trials. I cherish this time for centering and perspective.

I heard it said once that Christmas means more of Christ. Yes, this is my craving, more of Christ, each Advent day.Continue Reading

Three years ago through DNA testing, Jeni & learned we had an older brother on our paternal side. We finally met! What a (surreal) gift it was to get to know this big-hearted man and to learn about his life. God’s handprint is woven throughout this story in the beautiful and even in the painful pieces.
