His Word Brings Joy Part Two
God Speaks to Us
Over 2,000 years ago, Jesus spoke to His disciples and followers. But His message was not for them alone, it was for us, too. He knew we would read His words and seek direction, comfort, and wisdom. Jesus said in Mark 4:9, “Whoever has ears, let them hear.”
God has much to say in both the Old and New Testaments. Yet, are we hearing?
He tells us we can call to Him and that He will answer us by showing us great and mighty things we do not know. (Jeremiah 33:3) His Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. (Psalm 119:105) In Romans 10:17, we learn that faith comes by hearing, and hearing is by reading the Word of God.
Here, I find joy – that the God of the universe would speak so personally to me!
I recently had a decision to make: a fork in my road regarding starting a business or continuing to work my same job, or doing both. I prayed the Lord would give me direction through the words in His Word. I found my decision being formed by Christ’s message in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) specifically, where Jesus called us to be like a City on a Hill.
Some people audibly hear His voice or have had those types of experiences. But mostly and consistently, the Bible is where He speaks to me as He did while I wrestled with that decision.
I went with the third choice, by the way.
My friend, Are you listening? How does God speak to you? Have you ever heard His audible voice? Do you have ears to hear as you read your Bible?
Speak, O Lord, as we come to You
To receive the food of Your Holy Word.
Take Your truth, plant it deep in us;
Shape and fashion us in Your likeness,
That the light of Christ might be seen today
In our acts of love and our deeds of faith.
Speak, O Lord, and fulfill in us
All Your purposes for Your glory.
