My Best-Loved Books of 2024

My Best-Loved Books of 2024

It was another enjoyable year of reading for yours truly.

There are too many to write about, but as I review my list of the 55 I read, I’ve chosen a few favorites for this annual recap (and no, none of my nerdy theology or science books are included).

  • Are you in the mood for a cozy (not scary or gory) whodunit? I like these kinds of stories; they are even better with a comedic element. First place in this category goes to Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Q. Sutanto (language).
  •  How about a gothic novel set in 1906 in an atmospheric English locale? This captivating tale had me hooked. Mrs. England by Stacey Halls was a 5-star.
  • Looking for riveting historical fiction? I’ve got two for you: The Women by Kristin Hannah received much buzz and awards this year. The women in Vietnam were never considered war heroes, and this story is dedicated to them (language, war, and mature themes). Number two is The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles. It is a superbly written tale with an enthralling narrative and compelling characters (some course language and themes).
  • What were my best-loved Christian non-fiction reads? I have two shout-outs: The 40-Day Sugar Fast: Where Physical Detox Meets Spiritual Transformation by Wendy Speake. The subtitle says it all. I’ve been sugar-busting for many months now, and this book sure helped me on my journey. Next is Jesus by Lisa Harper—a birthday gift from my pal, Carrie. I love how Lisa Harper expresses her thoughts; her humor is so fun. She hosts one of my favorite theology podcasts (LISA HARPER — Back Porch Theology Podcast).
  • My most surprising contemporary fiction fave? Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. My book club loved it! Who knew we needed to dive into the world of a loveable octopus? (Language and more.)
  • Are you a fan of The Princess Bride movie? If so, you will adore the audio version of As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride by Cary Elwes, Rob Reiner, and Joe Layden. It is a captivating listen with interviews and fun facts.
  • Need solace in uncertain times? Let’s end with these (always five-stars for me): The Mitford Series by Jan Karon. I re-read the first three in 2024—a hug for the heart.

Which one will you pick up first?

I adore connecting with my friends over books; you can find me on Goodreads.  What are you enjoying these days? What book did you struggle to put down in 2024?  I’m devouring this fantastic one: The Night in Question by Susan Fletcher.

Cheers to a magnificent year of reading in 2025!

This is always such a few one. I look forward to reading many of these. I haven’t done any reading this holiday season. I need a pick me up, so I think I’ll read the first Mitford book.
    Happy New Year!
