A Summer Reset

June 24, 2019 By Kristin Saatzer 4 Comments

How did it get so late so soon?

A Summer Reset

Dear Time, I give you permission to s-l-o-w down. Thank you.

Spring flew so swiftly. There was not a day when my calendar was not bursting, the days were filled with mostly good stuff (games, graduations, visits from family and friends, award ceremonies, banquets, parties, and end of the school year fun) and I am grateful. But the pace has caught up with me.

So, I need permission to halt, to reset, and get my bearings. My dad was in the hospital last week and thankfully he is recovering well. As I sat with him and watched the action buzz around me, I exhaled and realized that I had not stopped much in these last few months. I picked up my phone and clicked on my recent-past calendar, then marveled at the events and emotions 2019 has brought thus far.

So today is a day to unwind. I am nestled in my backyard as my sweet dog rests her chin on my foot. It is about 75 degrees, as calm winds coil the tall trees. Medicine for the soul.

Summer has officially begun; this year is half-cooked. I can already see 2020 preparing to rise in the skyline. I’ve come to learn in these years of living prayerfully and intentionally, that early summer is an excellent time to retune and reflect. To rest and breathe. To soak up the sun and beautiful breezes of this fleeting season. To talk to God about what was and what is to come.

Now, I invite you to get alone and join in on some self-reflection. So, let’s take a deep breath. And then another… as you think on what the last six months have held for you, and what you look to next, ponder the following. Continue Reading

Can We Talk About Summer?

July 8, 2017 By Kristin Saatzer 6 Comments

“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.”

―John Lubbock, The Use Of Life

How do you savor summer?

My childhood summers were idyllic. Unfortunately, this ruined me once I grew up and faced the Real World. Adult life does not stop for the summer.

My sister and I played daily in the pool and on our lunch “break” watched reruns of The Brady Bunch and The  Andy Griffith Show. There were vacations, ice cream, cousins, friends and my bestie, Carrie. With our mom, we visited the library because books and summer belong together. Our grandparents treated us to fish and chips on Friday nights. We covered miles of territory with our roller skates and bikes.

Obviously, replicating the activities of yore is not the answer. I live a grown up life and summer is full of adult responsibilities, as is the rest of the year. Yes, beach trips, ice cream, and novels, etc. make for lovely summer vibes. Yet, what I’m grasping for here is the feeling of summer; the  atmosphere of my heart. A soul rest. As a child, I knew peace, rest, safety,  joy, and serenity in the summertime. I felt no guilt while eating ice cream, reading books, giggling with buddies or soaking in the sun. I had no agenda and did not measure my worth by what I accomplished.

So, if you and I were sitting around the table together, I would ask you your thoughts on this. How do you soak in the season? How do you feel summer in the midst of your responsibilities? How do you find soul rest?Continue Reading

Sunset Cliffs, Belmont Park, Handle’s ice cream… Besides the mild whiplash on the roller coaster, it was the perfect San Diego day! #americasfinestcity

Three years ago through DNA testing, Jeni & learned we had an older brother on our paternal side. We finally met! What a (surreal) gift it was to get to know this big-hearted man and to learn about his life. God’s handprint is woven throughout this story in the beautiful and even in the painful pieces.

Our baby is 18 today! The gift that this young man is to me defies description. Happy happy birthday, my Micah Jack, you are one of God’s sweetest gifts. I love you beyond measure.
