Jun 02 2025 A Summer for the Soul
“Summer is the time when the soul can sit still and soak up the sunlight of God’s goodness.”
– Unknown
There’s something sacred about summer.
The way the sunlight stretches across the sky just a little longer, as if heaven itself is holding its breath, savoring the warmth of the day. The sun setting on the ocean becomes a mural bursting with God’s spectacular paint.
In these warmer, long-day months, the world seems softer. Slower. And perhaps that’s on purpose. A permission slip to rest, rejoice, and reflect. Not a stop or a full halt—but a holy hush. A lingering. School doors close, schedules ease, and with the balmy breeze comes my soul exhaling.
“In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.” – Isaiah 30:15
“He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.” – Psalm 23:2-3
Summer reminds me that rest is not laziness; it is necessary. In a world that glorifies hustle, God whispers, “Be still.” – Psalm 46:10
Yet, I do not mistake this season for spiritual slumber. Summer is not just for rest but for reflection: for quiet walks with prayers floating upward with the scent of honeysuckle, journaling while sitting on an old beach chair with my toes in the sand. It’s for capturing and treasuring the moments when delight is tangible: funny jokes shared with my sons, communal meals with friends around the picnic table, and in the sheer joy of my granddaughter’s first laughs.
“Search me, God, and know my heart – Psalm 139:23
This season also invites me to remember.
I reminisce on the faithfulness of God in summers past. I reflect on the blessings I so easily forget in shorter, busier days. I remember to look ahead with hope and purpose.
“I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your wonders of old.” – Psalm 77:11
So, I will savor this season and fill it with good things: scripture, books, beach days, baseball, outdoor concerts, family and friends, sunsets, and stillness. I’ll record my memories like psalms and plant seeds of joy that will bloom long after this summer has faded.
Friend, when the sun sets slowly and golden over your home, remember: the same God who paints the evening sky is gently drawing something beautiful in you. Join me this season as we let His light linger long in our resting, rejoicing, and reflection.
“The Lord is God, and he has made his light shine on us.” – Psalm 118:27
